Hugo Ekitike has admitted his pride at scoring his first goal for Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace.

He has since taken to social media to share his thoughts on the season's curtain raiser.

Writing on Instagram on Monday night, Ekitike said: "Not as expected.

"But proud to have played my first official game with Liverpool and scored my first goal."

But, despite Liverpool's quick start at Wembley, the FA Cup winners restored parity in the 17th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta sent Alisson Becker the wrong way from the penalty spot after a foul from Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool, though, did regain the lead less than five minutes later - when Jeremie Frimpong's cross found the back of the net after catching goalkeeper Henderson out at the back post.

However, Palace struck back late in the second half to take the game to penalties as Ismaila Sarr struck.

After misses from Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott in the penalty shoot-out, Liverpool were unable to win the Community Shield for the second time in three seasons.
