Hugo Ekitike has said he is ready to play alongside another striker as speculation continues about Alexander Isak's future.

The Newcastle United striker was omitted from the club’s pre-season tour of Asia and has reportedly made it clear he is ready for a new challenge amid interest from Liverpool.

The Reds enquired about Isak’s availability last week but did not submit an official bid.

The arrival of Ekitike, who was also of interest to Newcastle, has led to suggestions Liverpool will not bring in another no.9 this summer, despite having the funds available to sign the Swedish star.

However, Ekitike’s ability to play in the wide areas and in a more withdrawn role was seen as part of the appeal for Liverpool when deciding to sign the Eintracht Frankfurt man, and supporters would love to see him partner Isak at Anfield this season.

Asked about his versatility, Ekitike told Liverpool's website: “I mean, I do what the coach asks me to do, but yeah, I like to do everything.

“I can’t define myself only as a striker [who likes] to finish: I like to play, I like to be in the game, in the collective part of play [and] create also.

“So, I can do both – I can play alone and I like to play also with another striker and I think that’s what makes me versatile, but you know now in this football you need to adapt.”

Meanwhile, Ekitike has revealed the role Arne Slot played in his decision to sign for Liverpool, with the head coach first speaking to the Frenchman at the end of last season.

“We had a very good first discussion together

“I find him very interesting and I was very pleased to see what I can do with him because I think he is a really nice guy and I can still improve and progress with him.

So, yeah, he is a really good coach and good person first, so that’s why he made me want to come here.

“When you see a coach that can make and improve players, you know you want to be with him and progress because you know he can make you go to the next step,” Ekitike added
