Hugo Ekitike was sent off for taking his shirt off after the winner for Liverpool against Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

The goal was Isak’s first strike since his move to Liverpool from Newcastle, which broke the record for the most expensive transfer deadline day transfer ever.

An injury for Giovanni Leoni soured Liverpool’s win over Southampton, and Arne Slot now only has three fit centre-backs in his squad.

Ekitike received his first yellow card for throwing the ball away before removing his shirt after scoring the winning goal.

Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail has now reported that Ekitike is due to be fined two weeks’ wages for the red card he picked up against the Saints.

Steele suggested that the reason for such a hefty fine was as much the manner in which Ekitike was sent off as it was the red card itself.

Ekitike’s red card was picked up in the Carabao Cup, but due to the FA’s rules, domestic cup bans do extend to other domestic competitions as well.

As a result, Ekitike will serve his one-match ban against Crystal Palace, who Liverpool are due to take on on Saturday.

Ekitike had made a blistering start to his Liverpool career, scoring in each of his first three Liverpool appearances since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Since that run, Ekitike went three games without a goal, but has now scored two in two games, signalling a potential return to form.

Slot will hope that after a weekend off, Ekitike is back and raring to go when Liverpool face a tough trip to Galatasaray next Wednesday.
