What began as a night of hope for Marco Rossi’s Hungary quickly descended into familiar frustration as defensive lapses and missed opportunities cost them dearly against Roberto Martinez’s star-studded visitors.
The goals in Hungary’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal were scored by Barnabás Varga (two for Hungary), with Portugal’s goals coming from Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo (penalty), and João Cancelo.
Portugal’s victory maintains their perfect start to Group F, moving them three points clear of Armenia and five ahead of both Hungary and the Republic of Ireland.
For Hungary, the defeat represents another near-miss against elite opposition, with their inability to see out results against top teams continuing to hamper their qualification hopes.
Nemezti Sport gave Szoboszlai a 6/10 and wrote:
“He started deeper than usual, so he was involved in the game often, trying to play short and helping our team bring the ball out of the box with his short passes, earning applause for a sliding tackle.”
“Before Hungary’s goal, he launched Zsolt Nagy brilliantly, registering thirty touches with ninety percent passing accuracy before half-time.”
“His playmaking ability is outstanding, but if he played further forward, we could create more chances, as he was too far from Barnabás Varga.”
“His clearance in the 50th minute was greeted with loud applause.”
“However, it was a big mistake to pass toward Milos Kerkez during the intense pressing before Portugal’s third goal.”
The result leaves Hungary sitting third in the group on just one point, level with Ireland but ahead on goal difference.
With Armenia having defeated Ireland 2-1 earlier in the evening, Rossi’s side find themselves in an increasingly precarious position just two matches into the campaign.
