Liverpool are desperate to bring in a new striker and are still planning to sign one even if Darwin Nunez stays, Rousing The Kop understands.

Nunez is a player whose future has been up in the air all summer and despite the transfer window being open for a month now, a decision is yet to be made.

The 26-year-old had interest from Napoli and appeared keen on the move, but the Italian club have decided to move on as they felt Liverpool’s asking price was far too high.

The Uruguayan still has interest in him, with most of this coming from Saudi Arabia, with it still unclear whether he would be open to a move to the Kingdom.

The Reds are also said to be preparing a bid for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, casting Nunez’s future even further in doubt, although Liverpool are still open to selling as long as their valuation is met.

Everyone knows by this point that Arne Slot wants a new striker for his forward line, with most believing that they would sell Nunez to facilitate any move.

However, RTK transfer expert Graeme Bailey says that there is a possibility he still stays, but that will not affect Liverpool’s pursuit of a striker.

“Liverpool have stood by their value, there really are no bargains at Anfield this summer – we saw that with Andy Robertson, we have seen that with Luis Diaz, they want a big fee for Harvey Elliott and even Jarell Quansah went for good money,” Bailey said.

“With Nunez, we have reported that Napoli tried and failed with a bid worth less than £50million, with that we learnt that Liverpool wanted around £65m.

“Napoli, despite agreeing personal terms with Nunez, have turned their attention to Lorenzo Lucca and that deal is moving on.”

Bailey concluded by saying: “Is this a gamble from Liverpool – I guess, but I am told that even if Nunez ended up staying, Liverpool still want a new number nine but they would also be willing to keep Nunez, although I do still think he goes.”

As shown last season, Slot simply did not trust Nunez in the big games and his patience appeared to be running thin, suggesting he is not in the Dutchman’s plans.

The 26-year-old will also be keen for more game time to get his career back on track, something he would not be promised if they signed a player like Isak.

The Uruguayan would be a decent back-up, but after spending £85m on him three seasons ago, Liverpool will probably want to cut their losses and cash in.

As Bailey reported, there is a chance he still stays, mainly due to the striker market not being the most appealing at this time, as well as Liverpool refusing to offer out any discounts to potential buyers.
