I don't blame Liverpool for Federico Chiesa decision - but Curtis Jones choice baffles me

England had a great result in Serbia on Tuesday and now look pretty much certain to qualify for the World Cup next summer.

But there’s a question that needs to be asked of Thomas Tuchel.

Why was Curtis Jones left out of the squad altogether?

Far from it.

He scored on his debut under interim boss Lee Carsley last November and had featured in all four games since Tuchel took charge, starting two of them including at right-back against Andorra in June.

So for Curtis, who plays regularly for the Premier League champions, to be left out entirely from the latest squad must have hurt him.

I know many Liverpool supporters don’t have the highest regard for the England national team but representing your country is important as a player.

Curtis has done well when he’s featured for the Reds this season and definitely made a big difference when he came off the bench against Arsenal last time out.

He just has to now knuckle down and show at Liverpool what he is good at doing and try to regain his place in the England squad, particularly with the World Cup in mind next summer.

Indeed, the Reds could benefit from that as it will give Curtis an extra incentive to prove Tuchel wrong.

It’s all he can do.

There was another notable omission last week when Federico Chiesa was left out of Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League.

That perhaps tells you where Chiesa is at the moment in terms of Arne Slot’s thinking, with Rio Ngumoha preferred.

I can understand that, but while a blow it isn’t a terminal one for Chiesa.

He will probably play in the League Cup game against Southampton later this month and there will be other opportunities in the Premier League.

Similar to Curtis, he just simply has to show the best of what he can do.

Gearing up for annual golf event

Liverpool are back in action at Burnley on Sunday and will hope their early-season momentum hasn’t been checked by the international break.

But there’s a big event before that.

The John Aldridge Golf Classic is taking place for the 22nd time in Portugal, and each year we raise about €25,000 for local charities and children’s funds in the Algarve.

We get help from both Liverpool and the Forever Reds association for the auction, for which I am always very appreciative.

We will be looking forward to the golf on Friday and Saturday with 22 teams of fourballs, with players from Merseyside, Ireland, Scotland and locals, and then a few drinks on Sunday and hopefully toasting a Liverpool win!
