Alexander Isak has certainly unsettled Newcastle United’s preseason.
The Tyneside club entered this summer looking to build on an impressive season in which they ended their 70-year-long wait for a domestic trophy.
With the Carabao Cup secured, Newcastle and Eddie Howe were optimisitic that additions to the squad could help them build on that success, as Champions League football is also set to return to St.
James Park.
However, with multiple targets slipping through their fingers and off to other clubs, frustration has grown and now the situation surrounding Alexander Isak continues to irritate the club.
Alexander Isak opted not to join Newcastle’s pre-season tour of South Korea, as the Swedish striker instead headed to Spain to train alone at his previous club Real Sociedad.
Isak is expected to rejoin his teammates in training when they return to England on Monday.
Following Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, Eddie Howe admits he doesn’t know whether the Swede will rejoin the squad or not.
Speaking in the press conference post-match, he said: “Of course I’d like him to be, but whether he will I don’t know at this moment in time.
Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home.”
An intriguing answer, as if Isak’s decision was clear, Howe would’ve been able to give a definitive answer.
It appears that Alexander Isak’s head has still very much been turned by Liverpool, and whilst he may eventually reluctantly return to training, he is still set to push through the move away from the club.
It was confirmed yesterday that Liverpool never left the race for Alexander Isak, and plan to bid again for the Swede if the club can line up a suitable replacement.
Benjamin Sesko appears to be that replacement at the minute.
If Newcastle United can agree to a deal with RB Leipzig, they will be more open to selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool.
This is one to continue to keep an eye on.
