‘I hope’: Andy Robertson has already told Liverpool fans what they can do to help persuade him to stay

The Scotsman has to go down as one of Liverpool’s best signings of the modern era.

The Reds’ recruitment is something that has been praised for many years as they have the ability of turning an average footballer into one of the world’s best.

Andy Robertson is one of the best examples of this.

Signing for just £8m in 2017, the left-back has gone from a decent full-back to one of the best the league has seen, and definitely Liverpool’s best in the recent era of football.

However, after eight years at the club, Atletico Madrid have registered their interest in Robertson and look set to prise him away from Anfield in a move that not many saw coming.

Now 31, the Scotsman is likely to depart after a sub-par season by his standards and risk of becoming the back-up to the incoming Milos Kerkez, although he may have already told Liverpool fans what they can do to ensure he stays beyond this season.

Earlier on in the season, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold could have all left Liverpool this summer following the expiration of their contracts.

This is something Robertson asked fans to do for him too at a Football For Change charity event back in May, although rumours of his departure suggest it has not worked.

So I hope all you guys (the fans) can help me with making the same noise around a new contract as you did with Mo [Salah] and Virgil [van Dijk],” Robertson said at the event as per the Liverpool Echo.

“Maybe you (Carragher) can stop linking the club with other left-backs as well!

“I am not as young as I once was but I love this club and I have had some great memories here, so let’s see what the future holds.”

Despite his future now more up in the air as it ever has been, Robertson could still have a massive role to play as the Reds aim to defend the title next season.

Kerkez joining Liverpool means he will likely lose his place in the starting XI, but rotation will be key ahead of a busy schedule.

Not only will the Hungarian be playing regular European football for the first time in his career, but he may also need a little bit of time to adjust, with Robertson being the perfect role model to help Kerkez settle in.

It may not be the perfect job role for the Scotsman but it could be vital in the young left-back’s success, as well as still having the opportunity for some game time at the team he has been at for so long.

It would be understandable if the 31-year-old decided to go to Atletico in search of a new challenge, but he still has plenty to give in a Liverpool shirt, hopefully starting next season.
