Former Bayer Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz has described new Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz as the 'greatest talent' he’s had the pleasure of coaching.

The Reds confirmed on Friday evening that they had completed the signing of the Germany international.

The deal, which includes a guaranteed £100 million and a further £16m in add-ons, tops the Anfield club’s previous club record signing.

Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director, had been engaged in negotiations for the attacking midfielder for three weeks before a deal was finally struck.

The 22-year-old was in such high demand this summer, with Liverpool beating Bayern Munich and Manchester City to his signature.

Wirtz scored 57 goals in 197 games for Leverkusen and impressed as he helped the BayArena outfit to the Bundesliga title in 2024.

And speaking to German publication BILD, Bosz, who gave Wirtz his first-team debut at Leverkusen, has offered a glowing appraisal of Liverpool’s new man.

“I knew he was something special – the greatest talent I've had the pleasure of coaching,” he said.

“He was important for us.

Flo played well from the start, kept the ball, and played well going forward.”

Speaking in the same interview, former Leverkusen vice-captain Julian Baumgartlinger revealed how Wirtz left his former team-mates in awe in his first training session with the club following his move from Cologne.

"None of us knew who he was,” he recalled.

It quickly became clear to all of us: Flo is no ordinary youth player.

“When he started with us, Kai Havertz had still been at Leverkusen for a few months.

"Having such a young player again after Kai's move to Chelsea was very special.
