Liverpool are closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window in Jeremie Frimpong.
The Bayer Leverkusen defender is expected to join the Reds in the coming days with Frimpong having a medical at Liverpool on Monday, with the Anfield side triggering the right-back’s £30m release clause to get the deal done early.
A regular for the Netherlands national team, Frimpong joining Liverpool will increase the Dutch playing contingent to four players, with Arne Slot’s role as manager also giving the Reds a strong Holland presence heading into next season.
And one of Liverpool’s current Dutch players, Cody Gakpo, has now shared what he thinks of Frimpong ahead of the defender’s potential move to Merseyside.

Speaking to reporters after Monday’s 3-2 loss away to Brighton & Hove Albion, Gakpo praised Frimpong after being asked what he thought of the Leverkusen defender, with an announcement on the transfer expected soon.
Gakpo said when asked about Frimpong joining Liverpool: “Maybe you know more than me!
He is a very good guy, I know him very well from the national team, a good player as well.
So let’s see if he comes or not.”
With Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to sign for Real Madrid having announced his departure already from Liverpool, the Reds working fast to bring in a replacement in Frimpong is a move that many supporters will greatly appreciate.

And with Gakpo giving his international teammate a stamp of approval, Liverpool fans will be even more excited to see how Frimpong fares with the Premier League champions, where he will compete with Conor Bradley for the right-back position.
Liverpool were never going to find a direct replacement for Alexander-Arnold given how unique the England international is, with the defender’s skillset one that the Reds will struggle to find in one singular player in the market.
Yet what Frimpong lacks in the one-of-a-kind technical abilities Alexander-Arnold has the Dutchman makes up for in raw attacking chaos, with the Leverkusen fullback more akin to an all-out winger than a defender.
Indeed, Liverpool have two very different but effective right-back options in Bradley and Frimpong for next season, and this tactical flexibility will allow Slot to be even more specific with his game plans depending on which teams he will face off against.
