The early part of the transfer window at Liverpool has focused on potential incomings arriving into Arne Slot’s squad.

With Jeremie Frimpong done and Florian Wirtz soon likely to follow, there has been plenty of excitement to be had amongst the fanbase.

However, with Wirtz set to cost a record transfer fee, it is inevitable that Liverpool will look to balance the books in the coming weeks.

There are a number of candidates for exit within the Liverpool squad, with a feeling that several have run their natural course with the club.

Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold have already gone, leaving a slight dearth of homegrown talent within the group.

But the exits of former Liverpool academy players are seemingly not done there.

After a frustrating season under Slot, Harvey Elliott has spoken out to once again suggest he is looking to leave his boyhood club.

Elliott made only two Premier League starts during 2024/25, both coming after the title had already been secured.

Injury played a part in that, there’s no doubt about that, but after an early issue the 22-year-old was largely fit from December onwards.

19 has admitted that there is a conversation to be had this summer.

“It’s just a situation that me and the team on my behalf have to have a conversation about, because I’m coming to an age now where I’m 22, I’m going to be 23 next season, and I don’t really want to be wasting years of my career, because it’s a short career,” Elliott told The Daily Mail.

“I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself and the best player I can be.

If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision I’m going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.”

“Nothing makes me want to leave,” he added.

I just need to make that decision.”

While there will be sadness at seeing a player who clearly loves the club deeply depart, there is a lot of sense in Elliott’s emotional admission.

He is still looking to break into the full England squad, for example, and he’ll want to give himself the best chance of making it to the World Cup next summer.

That isn’t going to happen if he’s stuck on the bench at Liverpool.

Despite his lack of playing time, however, there is a good chance that Elliott makes Liverpool a very tidy profit this summer.

Signed for a nominal fee from Fulham as a 16-year-old, there have been suggestions that it could take as much as £45m to prise Elliott away from Liverpool this year.

Whether that eventually materialises will largely depend on how much interest there is in him and which clubs come to the table.
