Sami Khedira has picked Florian Wirtz as the best German footballer as he shared his admiration for the Liverpool transfer target.

The Reds are in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over what would prove to be a club-record deal for the playmaker.

The Bundesliga outfit have rejected two bids from Liverpool so far, with the most recent totalling £109m, but all parties are still confident that a deal will be finalised this summer.

Wirtz wants to join the Reds after turning down the advances of Bayern Munich, who had previously been the favourites to land his signature.

Man City had also already withdrawn their interest before Liverpool stole a march on the competition.

And German World Cup winner Khedira has now sung the praises of Wirtz in an exciting appraisal of the 22-year-old when picking the playmaker as his nation’s best player over the likes of Manuel Neuer, Leroy Sane and Marco Reus.

“Look at his skills, look at his impact on the game,” he told Goal ahead of last weekend's Champions League final.

He’s scoring goals, his passing, his position.

Yeah, I love this guy.”

Wirtz has returned 57 goals and 65 assists from 197 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, and emerged as their star player under Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso.

Making 94 appearances over the past two seasons, the 22-year-old recorded a combined 34 goals and 35 assists during this time-period as he helped fire Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title and also won the DFB-Pokal.

Meanwhile, he has scored seven times and claimed seven assists from 30 appearances for the Germany national team, since being handed his senior debut in March 2021.

Wirtz was on the scoresheet for Germany on Wednesday night as Liverpool’s negotiations with Leverkusen continue.
