Former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic believes Ruben Amorim would be the perfect replacement for Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

Klopp announced in January that he would be stepping down as Reds boss at the end of the season.

Amorim, the Sporting Lisbon manager, is the current frontrunner to succeed the German at Anfield.

Amorim has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young managers with Sporting, with the Portuguese on the verge of leading his side to a second Liga Portugal title in four years.

In truth, his success at Sporting is made even more impressive by the fact that the 39-year-old spent the majority of his playing career representing their bitter-rivals, Benfica.

Having spent time in their youth academy, he returned to the club in 2008 and went on to make 154 appearances, winning three league titles and six domestic cups, before hanging up his boots in 2017.

And it was at Benfica where Amorim crossed paths with Matic, who joined the Portuguese giants as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move to Chelsea in January 2011.

The Serbian would go on to make 99 appearances for Benfica, before returning to Stamford Bridge in January 2014.

A team-mate of Amorim throughout this time, the pair made 16 appearances together for Benfica, and were named in the same matchday squad on 15 further occasions.

Only three years younger, Matic has revealed how Amorim, aided by his ability to speak English, helped him settle at Benfica.

And despite also being a former Man United player, the 35-year-old, who now plays for Lyon, has backed his old team-mate to be a great replacement for Klopp at Liverpool.

“Ruben Amorim is an excellent person,” Matic told O Jogo.

“He was one of those who helped me the most when I arrived at Benfica because he speaks English very well.

(laughs).

“I see Ruben Amorim at a big club, I don't know if it will be Liverpool, but if it happens I'm sure he'll be a great replacement for Klopp because Ruben understands football and has the personality and character to be a great coach - he already currently is.
