Former Liverpool defender Neco Williams has been one of the Premier League’s best full-backs this season, playing every one of Nottingham Forest ’s games in a campaign that has seen the Midlands club defy the odds and challenge for a Champions League spot.
That Williams is performing so constantly at this level may not surprise those at Liverpool who witnessed his progression.
Liverpool won that race but, speaking in a recent interview, the defender explained how close he came to joining the Reds’ great rivals instead.
“I guess it came naturally to me.
I was still playing for Man United at that time too, training with both teams.
“All my family are United supporters, so everyone thought I would choose them, but I chose Liverpool

During his time at Anfield, Williams became accustomed to rubbing shoulders with some of the Premier League’s greatest-ever full-backs, something which certainly helped develop his skills.
“At that time, I was still very young and maturing into a player, always learning. You could argue I was playing with the best team in the world, so for me it was about trying to take in as much information as possible and learn. Trent [Alexander-Arnold) and [Andy] Robertson were probably the best full-backs in the world that season, so I was learning so much.”
