Arnaut Danjuma has revealed he once held transfer talks with Arne Slot, only to turn down the now Liverpool head coach in favour of a move to Everton.
The 28-year-old spent the 2023/24 season on loan with the Blues, scoring twice from 20 appearances.
He had previously spurned Everton’s advances to join Tottenham Hotspur on loan in January 2023 when making his first return to English football after leaving AFC Bournemouth for Villarreal in August 2021.
The Netherlands international, who is now back with El Submarino Amarillo after spending last season on loan at Girona, has sporadically been linked with Liverpool throughout his career.

But he actually held transfer talks with Slot ahead of the Dutchman’s final season with Feyenoord, only to reject a return to the Eredivisie in favour of another switch to the Premier League.
And he’s now explained his decision, with Danjuma admitting he had been tempted to link up with Slot at Feyenoord but ultimately could not resist the lure of the English top-flight.
“It’s no secret that Slot and I have spoken,” he told Voetbalzone.
The reason I chose Everton was the Premier League.
I would have said no, but Slot made me doubt myself.”
Danjuma made 34 appearances for Girona last season, returning three goals and two assists, as he started 20 times.
He had previously started nine of his 20 appearances on loan at Everton, after finding himself out of favour under Sean Dyche as he failed to feature after the end of January, and only one of his 12 outings for Spurs.
Returning to Villarreal once more, the forward now only has one year remaining on his contract with the club.
“I have already spoken to the president of Villarreal and it was always the intention that I would return after this year.
“However, I have had some interest from abroad here and there, so I will just make sure that I am as fit as possible and then I will see what happens.
“If something lucrative comes along or another great project like Girona that plays at the highest level, then you can always consider it.
