‘I think’: Marc Guehi’s former teammate says he knows exactly what will happen if Liverpool deal goes through

Liverpool have recently shown that they will not rush into buying a centre-back and want to make sure they would be the perfect fit for the club.

Although the Reds are usually shrewd operators in the transfer market, the centre-back position is an area where they perhaps have not recruited as smartly in the past.

In 2021, Liverpool had a bit of a crisis at the back and it resulted in signing Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke, a move that had potential but really did not work out.

They did not learn from their mistakes either as the following year, they panic-bought Ben Davies from Preston, although he never managed to make an appearance for the club.

Despite both of these not costing very much at all, it showed somewhat of a careless approach to this area of the pitch for a few years, something they have changed and now almost always get right.

Marc Guehi could be the newest centre-back arrival at Anfield this summer and it seems like a move that would work out if it were to happen, with the Englishman’s former teammate indicating that he knows exactly how he would get on if a move did materialise.

Guehi has been one of the Premier League’s top centre-backs for a few years now and he has proven his worth in a Crystal Palace shirt countless times.

He has even been rewarded with a call-up to the national team, with the Englishman becoming a key part of their Euro 2024 campaign due to injuries at the back.

His former teammate at the Chelsea academy, Charlie Wakefield, believes that experience has shown how he can perform at the top level and is one of the reasons he will thrive at Anfield.

“At the highest-pressure point of his career, he stepped up to the plate and I think he’s got that in him as well,” Wakefield said on the Redmen TV 2 YouTube channel.

“Anfield is probably the hardest place to go, whether you’re playing for Liverpool or against them.

Going to Anfield, it’s got such a passionate crowd because they want the best for the club, so it’s going to be a high-pressure environment for him which I think he’ll thrive in if he signs.”

It seems an obvious statement to say that a club will not sign a player if they cost too much, but when they have one year left on their contract, price really does matter.

Palace were quoting teams around £70m in the past, a fee they simply will not get if they sell this summer, with around £50m likely the maximum they will receive.

Liverpool’s move for Guehi is dependent on the competition for his signature too, as if a bidding war breaks out, the Reds will likely opt out.

Guehi wants guaranteed minutes too which is something that could prove tricky as Ibrahima Konate is currently blocking that from happening, suggesting those higher up at Liverpool have some big decisions to make.
