Liverpool have tried to spend big in the past but it looks like they are about to get their man.
When it was confirmed that the Reds were set to sign Florian Wirtz, many supporters were shocked, especially given the transfer fee.
As the deal went on, however, it turned into more of a saga and fans were getting impatient, with many getting flashbacks to when Moises Caicedo opted to sign for Chelsea instead.
However, Wirtz’s move to Liverpool is almost complete and almost everyone knows it, especially rival clubs as they look to sign stars to be able to keep pace with the Reds next season.
Costing £100m, Wirtz’s transfer fee could rise as high as £116m with add-ons, breaking the British transfer record.
Caicedo himself currently has the record at £115m and he has recently spoken out about how he feels potentially no longer being the most expensive player the Premier League has seen.

Realistically, no player is worth the amount clubs are willing to pay these days, but the current market means they have to if they want to sign the best of the best.
Many would imagine that Caicedo might be a little frustrated that he may no longer be the most expensive player in the league, but if he is, he hid it well.

“I didn’t know Liverpool were going to pay that,” the Ecuadorian told Sky Sports News as per the Liverpool Echo.
“It’s good [that Wirtz could cost £1 million more than him], it’s good.
“Yeah he’s a great player.
I think everybody watching [can see] how he plays he’s a very good player.
So I’m happy to hear he’s coming to the Premier League.”

Liverpool did try to break the British transfer record before when they tried to sign Caicedo, and they even had a £111m bid accepted by Brighton.
However, he had already given Chelsea his word and opted to sign for them instead in a move that seemed to have flopped after his first season, but now looks more worthwhile after winning the Blues’ Player of the Year for their recent campaign.
Firstly, and perhaps the most obvious benefit, is that Liverpool saved a lot of money by this deal not going through, money that they can now spend on a player like Wirtz.
However, this failed move ignited Ryan Gravenberch’s Liverpool career and the Dutchman has become one of their best players, for a very cheap price too.
The 23-year-old’s ability to sit in and break attacks down will only benefit Wirtz too, giving the German the freedom to express himself in attack.
If Caicedo did join Liverpool in 2023, Wirtz would very likely not be arriving at Anfield this summer, proving that every story has a silver lining.
