'I think': Neville gives verdict on whether Liverpool will let Alexander-Arnold leave early to join Real Madrid

Some players will leave others will arrive.

One of those certain to be heading for the Anfield exit is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who announced on Monday that he will leave Liverpool after 20 years at the club.

Alexander-Arnold is set to depart once his contract expires on June 30th, with Real Madrid his unofficial destination.

There is still a twist to be had in this story, though, as Madrid are keen to sign the 26-year-old to play in the upcoming Club World Cup which begins in June.

In order to get Alexander-Arnold out of his Liverpool contract, the European champions will have to pay a fee.

As the Reds prepare to make a decision on whether or not to let their right-back leave if an offer comes in, Gary Neville has given his verdict on what they should do.

Alexander-Arnold’s situation is arguably ugly enough without adding a push to get out of his contract early into the mix.

However, there have been suggestions Real Madrid are willing to pay almost £1m to get Alexander-Arnold two weeks early.

In business terms, it is a no brainer for Liverpool to take the money and cut the No.

And speaking on the ‘It’s Called Soccer!’ podcast, Neville believes the Reds should ‘do the deal’ if that’s what the player wants.

“I can see why Real Madrid have done it and why Trent Alexander-Arnold would like that because it will embed him into his teammates well before he gets the pressure put on him next season playing in Spain,” says the Man United legend.

“I think Liverpool will be torn.

But also there’ll be an element of them saying ‘we’ve got pride, we’ve got ego, we don’t need that million quid.’ But I don’t know.

“I think if they’re being sensible, he’s a player who’s been with them all his life, I would ask Alexander-Arnold and if he wants to go then do the deal and take the money,” Neville adds.

“He could say ‘I don’t want to do it’ but he must want to do it.”

As things stand, there has been no official approach from Real Madrid to Liverpool in order to buy Trent in the special transfer window which opens on June 10th.

Clearly, the direction of travel is that the Spanish giants will make that offer, though, so the Reds need to have their stance prepared.

In our opinion, there is no need for Liverpool to hold out on Alexander-Arnold for the sake of some pride.

The situation is better ended as swiftly as possible for all parties and that includes Liverpool and the supporters of the club.

Clearly, the Reds are getting way, way, way below market value for Alexander-Arnold and the nominal fee will be laughable when judged against his true market value.
