'I think': Owen Hargreaves makes 'shock' prediction about how many Ekitike will score for Liverpool this season

Liverpool fans will have a brand new attack to marvel at next season as Arne Slot begins to reshape his forward line.

Slot did a brilliant job with the players left at his disposal by Jurgen Klopp last year, but he has started to truly put his own stamp on the squad this summer.

Out have gone Luis Diaz and – soon – Darwin Nunez, with Hugo Ekitike so far the sole replacement to have been signed.

Though Ekitike’s arrival has been greeted with excitement by Liverpool supporters, he has somewhat played second fiddle to the potential signing of Alexander Isak.

Liverpool are prepared to spend big to get Isak, with the Newcastle star likely to arrive as Slot’s main centre-forward.

But while Isak will take some of the focus away from Ekitike if he does arrive at Anfield, former Man United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has backed the Frenchman to surprise just about everyone next season.

Ekitike has looked good during his two outings in a Liverpool shirt so far.

Fans will be looking forward to seeing him in action during Sunday’s Community Shield.

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the new campaign, though, Hargreaves says those supporters might be in for a shock when they realise just how good the 22-year-old is.

“I don’t think people realise how good Ekitike is,” says the pundit.

“I remember stood next to him thinking ‘he can play, he’s got a great touch, he’s quick, he can play off the left, play as a striker’.

I think he’s going to be amazing this year.”

“He’ll be a French international very soon and it’s amazing he wants to take on a challenge like this,” Hargreaves adds.

“Obviously he went to PSG and it didn’t really work out, but I think now he’s ready for this.

“I think he can score 20 goals, easy.

I think in the end people are going to be shocked by how talented this kid is.”

Given their similarly elegant yet speedy styles of running and finishing, Ekitike has been compared to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in the past.

While that is a lofty billing for the young striker to live up to, Hargreaves says he can see where the comparisons are coming from.

“I think because Thierry started on the left and then graduated to being a centre-forward, those comparisons are quite relevant,” he claims.

“When you watch them side by side, obviously it’s a lot to live up to with Thierry, but he’s got something, that’s for sure.”

Henry hit 17 goals in his debut season in the Premier League for Arsenal after joining from Juventus.
