‘I think’: Stan Collymore claims out of favour Liverpool star should stay at Anfield

Liverpool are expecting a big turnover this summer, starting with the attack.

The Reds may have scored the most goals in the Premier League this season, but they could, and probably should, have a lot more.

Lacking an out-and-out number nine, Liverpool are in the market for a new striker this summer, with Darwin Nunez, their actual number nine, expected to move on.

He has had plenty of chances in a Liverpool shirt but has been cut a frustrated figure too many times over the past three years, with this perhaps the summer when both parties call it quits.

He still shows flashes of potential but isn’t the clinical striker that Premier League champions require, although one person in particular has been urging him to stay despite an impossible task.

The pressure on a striker’s shoulders is already great before they have a huge transfer fee dangling above their hand, so it is no surprise to see Nunez, to some extent, flop.

However, there is a player still in there somewhere and he is adored on the red half of Merseyside, with ex-Liverpool player Stan Collymore believing that he has had a harder job than many realise and that he should stick around for one last dance.

“Sometimes people show clips of Darwin at Benfica and ask what’s happened.

Well, teams play differently, there are different people around you and the attacking momentum and intent has always been through Mohamed Salah,” Collymore told the Liverpool Echo.

“While Mo Salah is scoring 25-30 goals a season, it’s almost impossible for someone else to do the same.

You very rarely find someone who does the same in the same team.”

“So I am sure conversations are ongoing with Arne Slot and if he says he wants Darwin as a valued member of the team then I think he should stay.”

Despite Collymore, as well as many other Liverpool fans, wanting Nunez to stay, the situation appears to be beyond the tipping point and it is highly unlikely to see him don the red shirt again next season.

Although he has had a very underwhelming three years and seen his valuation drop significantly, plenty of clubs are still willing to take a punt on him and the Reds, somehow, will not lose too much money.

Saudi Arabian clubs, Atletico Madrid, Napoli and AC Milan want Nunez, with a potential bidding war something that Liverpool would love as they look to recoup as much of the £85m they spent on him.

The 25-year-old is open to all options as things stand but staying in Europe appears to be the most likely, with the Italian league a very viable destination for him.

It might be a shame to see the Uruguayan leave Anfield on a bit of a whimper, but he has brought some special moments that will go down in the club’s history, and he can also depart while himself a Premier League champion.
