Mohamed Salah was once a Jose Mourinho player at Chelsea, but his career took a very different turn to become a Liverpool legend(Image: SHAUN BOTTERILL/POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

Jose Mourinho was left enamoured after witnessing a 21-year-old Mohamed Salah tear his Chelsea team to shreds twice playing for Basel, so much so that his side shelled out £11m on the Egyptian months later.

But even though a grudge may exist between those on Merseyside and those in west London, it is not unheard of for players to have turned out for both in their individual careers.

One such player is Salah, who returns to Stamford Bridge a two-time Premier League champion now the title has been confirmed.

He and the Reds will be commemorated with a guard of honour by the team he used to represent.

With 397 appearances, 244 goals and 113 assists in Liverpool's colours, the choice made by Chelsea to sell the attacker has gone down as one of their greatest errors.

But the manager involved in that, Mourinho, told beIN Sports, as quoted by Sky Sports six years ago: "When the club decided to sell him, it was not me.

"I bought him, I didn't sell him, and my relationship with him was good, is good.

"I think that he doesn't regret that move because everything went well.

They returned two goals and three assists.

Perhaps Mourinho's decision-making was justified when the club won the 2014/15 Premier League title as Hazard and Willian played predominant roles.

But his Egyptian talent foresaw a glorious career that has now come to fruition, and wished to waste no time kickstarting that.

Discussing Salah's departure from Chelsea, Mourinho continued: "He was just a lost kid in London.

"He was a lost kid in a new world and we wanted to work him to become better and better and better but he was more in the idea that he wanted to play and not to wait.

"So we decided to put him on loan.

To put him on loan in a culture that I knew well - Italy, tactical football, physical football, good place to play.

"Fiorentina is a good team, without being a team with huge pressure playing for the title and we decided that move there."

The short-term spell in Florence was followed by a second year-long loan to AS Roma in 2015, one year later that move was made permanent and finally come 2017 it was time for Salah to make the step to Anfield.
