Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has revealed he could have signed for Everton(Image: 2022 Formula One World Championship Limited)

Jermaine Pennant has revealed he once turned down a move to Everton because he did not want to jeopardise his chances of making a dream switch to Liverpool in the future.

He returned three goals and 17 assists in that time before falling out of favour under Rafa Benitez and leaving on a free transfer in 2009.

But prior to joining Liverpool, the 42-year-old had the opportunity to sign for David Moyes' Everton having found his game-time limited at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger.

Pennant joined the Gunners for a then-record £2m fee when just 15 years old in January 1999.

But he only made 26 appearances in six years with the North London club as he instead spent time on loan at Watford, Leeds United and Birmingham City.

Birmingham eventually signed Pennant permanently for £3m in April 2005 after he impressed at St.

But Everton had also made a bid for the winger prior to him leaving Arsenal.

And Pennant has revealed he only rejected the move when his agent pointed out it would jeopardise his hopes of playing for his boyhood club, Liverpool, in the future if he signed for their Merseyside rivals.

“Well, I didn’t say (to Arsenal that I needed to leave), my agent did.

And Everton came in, I think the following season," Pennant said on the Undr The Cosh podcast.

because I’ve always been a Liverpool fan since I was a little kid.

"So he said, 'Look, if you play for Everton, you’re never going to play for Liverpool, you know that, right?'

“I was like, 'oh, but, you know, this is first-team football now.

Back then, they weren't a team that would be fighting relegation.

"You know you're going to be safe and if you do well, you can kick on then.

"But something in me just said, 'it's going to be good now but in the long run...' And I said to my agent, 'no, I don't want to do it'.

"My dream was I want to play for Liverpool and I want to play in the Champions League.
