Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has told of how he was left in tears after being jeered on his Anfield return as he sympathised with Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The attacker made the switch to Real Madrid just over 20 years ago with the Reds defender set to tread the same path as Owen to the Spanish capital.
The 26-year-old was subjected to boos by a section of Anfield during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal in his first appearance for Liverpool since announcing his intentions leave the club at the end of the season.
Following the reaction on L4, opinion has been split regarding Alexander-Arnold and whether the two-time Premier League-winning defender was deserving of jeers.
Arne Slot made the decision to drop him from the starting line-up to allow Conor Bradley a place in the first-team, after settling for a place on the bench during the defeat at Chelsea.

Alexander-Arnold replaced Bradley in the latter stages of the encounter but was greeted with boos during his introduction and with his first touches of the game.
Owen, who swapped Merseyside for Madrid in 2004, sympathised with the Liverpool defender and admitted that the nightmares from his Anfield returns still haunt him - possibly having the same impact on Alexander-Arnold.
"For his own people to boo him, leaves a big lump in your throat," said the 45-year-old.

"I remember sitting in the player's lounge after playing against Liverpool for Newcastle, my parents, myself, all in floods of tears because I've just been booed by my own people.
"I struggled to comprehend it nowadays so I'm probably the closest person on the planet who knows what it feels to be in Trent's shoes, he'll be moritifed.
"Trent will leave now knowing the second-to-last, possibly his last game, that there were people that booed and you can't get that out your head.
"Despite what's happened for years of his life, pure adulation, the one thing I remember and forget a lot (about the success), I just think they booed me at the end and it makes you feel absolutely sick for what you did for the club."
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was asked about the reception for Alexander-Arnold in light of their draw with Arsenal.
The Dutchman, like the 26-year-old and Mohamed Salah, faced season-long speculation over his future as he too was out of contract at Anfield.
However, both he and Salah signed a new two-year deal.
"The [crowd] reaction happened," Van Dijk said.
"He has to deal with it.

"We as a team have to deal with that as well.
"I wasn't really expecting something, to be honest, but I think maybe he expected this.
