Adam Lallana has made an honest admission about his Liverpool career ahead of returning to Anfield with Southampton.

The former Reds midfielder finished his career back with the Saints before joining their coaching staff in the summer after hanging up his boots at the end of last season.

The 37-year-old initially joined Liverpool from Southampton in a £25m deal in the summer of 2014 and would go on to make 178 appearances during six seasons with the Reds.

Helping the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and European Super Cup, Lallana returned 22 goals and 21 assists during his time with the club.

However, having initially emerged to play a starring role under Jurgen Klopp following the German’s arrival in October 2015, his final three seasons with Liverpool were predominantly plagued by injury as he fell down the pecking order.

Lallana admits he was annoyed to not be playing, but has a new appreciation for what Klopp achieved at Anfield following his own movement into coaching.

And while he believes he perhaps was not physically suited to Klopp’s preferred style of football long-term, alluding to his injury woes, he has no regrets and takes great pride in the role he played under the German.

“I suppose taking my first steps in coaching makes me appreciate even more what Jurgen did,” he told The Times.

“To manage an institution like Liverpool for so long and have that amount of pressure on your shoulders.

“As a player, you’re p***ed off with him when you’re not playing, but you don’t think about all the decisions he’s got to make and the other 24 people he has to look after.

“I know I played an important role in Jurgen’s reign and I’m very proud of that.

I wasn’t the best player over his time, but I was Jurgen’s guy at one point.

“I was his man and it was the same with Gareth Southgate when he first came in with England.

I took responsibility to try and pass on their philosophy to the group.

“I take a lot of pleasure in saying that now about Jurgen.
