As the protracted Alexander Isak transfer saga rumbles on, Newcastle United fans can be forgiven for getting a sense of deja vu.

Isak has been pushing hard to leave the north east in the last month, with Liverpool believed to be the frontrunners to secure his signature.

The Swedish striker was the subject of a £110million bid from the Reds at the beginning of August, which was swiftly turned down.

Since then, Isak has made it clear he doesn’t see his future on Tyneside, training alone and missing the first three games of the season for Eddie Howe’s side.

The 25-year-old, who scored 27 goals last season, including the winner in the Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool, recently released a scathing statement saying the club had “broken promises”.

And despite the Newcastle ownership reportedly presenting him with a lucrative new contract in a bid to make him stay at the club ahead of last Monday’s home defeat to Liverpool, Isak has no intention of doing so.

Reports in Sweden claimed this week that Isak had already said his goodbyes to his Magpies team-mates, which Eddie Howe later denied.

I wanted to win things and did, with the League Cup at Liverpool.

“I loved Newcastle, I loved the fans and I was settled there.

I couldn’t stay and watch fans who I loved have to settle for what was happening.”

Despite getting his move, Liverpool finished eighth that season while Newcastle secured an impressive fifth-place finish.
