'I was told': James Pearce shares what's been said to him about Andy Robertson's chances of leaving Liverpool

After doing plenty of incoming business during the opening month of the transfer window, Liverpool look set to balance their books in July.

Despite romping to the Premier League title last season, Arne Slot is seemingly happy to lose a number of key players this summer.

After sticking with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad during his opening year at the helm, Slot has started to make sweeping changes to his starting XI.

Part of that has seen a shift at left-back, where Milos Kerkez has been signed as a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson.

Robertson struggled at times last season, and although he ultimately played a big part in helping Liverpool to the Premier League title, it is clear that he is not going to feature as much going forward.

As a result, it had looked like Robertson was set to leave for Atletico Madrid.

With pre-season now merely days away, journalist James Pearce has taken a look at what that is next for Robertson.

Although Kerkez is expected to be Slot’s first choice left-back next season, that does not mean Robertson’s time at Liverpool is over.

There is no guarantee that the new signing will adapt straight away and Robertson’s experience would help mitigate any settling in period.

Nevertheless, it is clear that a reduced role is on the cards for the 31-year-old.

And speaking to The Redmen TV, Pearce said it has been made clear to him that Robertson is still deciding on whether he can stomach the change.

“At the minute it’s a difficult one to call because I was told that he’d gone away on holiday and wanted to have a think about things,” says the reporter.

“Liverpool are certainly hoping that he will stay, he’s been such an unbelievable servant to the club.

There’s such respect there that I think if Andy Robertson were to turn around and say ‘I can’t really face being knocked down order or not playing as much,’ because he’ll know you don’t spend 40 odd million on a left-back not to play him.

“So, I think at the moment the ball is in his court as to what he wants to do.”

Some Liverpool fans had perhaps hoped that Robertson’s proposed move to Atletico falling through meant he was destined to stay at Anfield.

However, according to Pearce, it is highly unlikely that the Madrid side are the only ones who have been on the phone to the Scotland captain’s agent this summer.

“I don’t think Atletico would have been the only club in for him,” says the journalist.

“I’m sure once it became clear that there was even a chance of getting him out of Liverpool, I bet the agent’s phone has been ringing red hot.”

We’re likely to know over the coming weeks whether Robertson is keen to jump at any of those offers.

In the meantime, he’s expected back at the Liverpool training ground for the start of pre-season on Tuesday.
