There’s a player I watched over eights years ago, who I think would be perfect for Liverpool this summer and Ruben Amorim could sign him.

Let’s cast our minds back to November 2013. Over eight years ago, I remember sitting down to watch England’s U16 side take on Northern Ireland at the Vitality Stadium.

This was the first game for some future young stars, and it was a competition to see who would lift the Victory Shield.

The game was live on Sky Sports, and I remember tuning in to watch one player in particular in action. That player was Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was making his debut at international level for England, playing at right-back.

Alexander-Arnold had a good game, from what I can recall. But he wasn’t the one who caught my eye the most in that match.

There was someone else who I thought played brilliantly, and who I have followed very closely ever since.

What Marcus Edwards did for England’s U16 side eight years ago

Wearing the number 10 on his back and donning a big afro, there was a diminutive kid in Marcus Edwards who stole the show for England.

At the time, Edwards was so gifted technically I’ve never seen another English player like him before. He would just weave past players with ease, and controlled the tempo of the game.

Edwards was simply brilliant, and it was to my surprise that he wasn’t given the chances he deserved at Tottenham.

Many years have gone by since, but I’ve always wanted him to end-up at Liverpool. From that moment eight years ago, I’ve followed his career, and I’ve been impressed by how much he has developed. Especially under Ruben Amorim.

Why Marcus Edwards could replace Mohamed Salah and thrive under Ruben Amorim

Under Amorim at Sporting CP, Edwards has established himself as one of the key members of Amorim’s squad.

As per Fotmob, only Pedro Goncalves (17) has created more big chances for Sporting CP in the league than Edwards (11) this season.

In total Edwards is closing on 50 goal contributions (48) under Amorim in just over 100 games (107. That’s a really solid return for a player who is still only 25-years-old.

He’s in the prime of his career right now, and with Amorim coming into Liverpool, now would be the perfect time to make the return back to the Premier League at Anfield.

In Amorim’s system, the right-wing role is completely different to what Salah is used to at Liverpool. It would not be a surprise to see the Egyptian leave the club this summer.

Saudi Arabian clubs are still sniffing about for his services, and Salah has just one year left on his contract.

If he does leave, who better to replace him with than someone who is already familiar with what Amorim wants in Edwards.

Plus, why not stop there. Liverpool should go all out for a double swoop and bring Viktor Gyokeres to the club, while they are at it as well.
