'I wonder': Sky journalist suggests Arne Slot could completely change formation if he signs £40m player for Liverpool

The Reds used to play ‘heavy metal football’ under Jurgen Klopp, especially at the beginning of his reign, and they had clear tactics in place.

Now, under Arne Slot, the style has not changed too much, it has just become a bit more methodical and Liverpool now look much more comfortable throughout matches.

The full-backs still stay high and crosses still get put into the box, but defensively, they look much more solid.

However, despite their success in Slot’s first season, the Dutchman could be about to change his tactics ahead of their title defence, and if he does, it may just suit a player who could come through the Anfield door very soon.

Managers can be very stubborn when it comes to their tactics and they sometimes think persistence is key.

However, change is not always a bad thing and Slot seems like the type of manager to believe that, but how much he is willing to change is yet to be tested.

If they sign Marc Guehi, however, he might be forced to make a drastic decision and potentially even change formation into a back three, although Sky Sports journalist Peter Smith thinks it might just work.

“Frimpong has come in, a player who plays so high on the right and loves to get forward, Kerkez loves bombing down that left side as well, I wonder if there is a thought in Arne Slot’s mind about could there ever be a back three at Liverpool,” Smith said on the Redmen TV 2 YouTube channel.

“You would have a Guehi and van Dijk sitting, as he gets older, having to do less of the stepping out and he can use his knowledge and reading of the game, with Konate on the right and the two wing backs bombing on.

“Guehi could then step into midfield, contribute with passes, and that would let him continue on that left side of a defence that we know he likes to do.”

Many have wondered why Liverpool never tried this formation out when their full-backs were at the peak of their attacking powers, but now they have fresh ones at their disposal, it might just work out for the better.

Although this deal only started to take shape less than two weeks ago, it could be well on its way to completion at this point.

Guehi will not sign a new deal at Crystal Palace and they risk losing him for free, suggesting they will want to cash in on him and receive at least a small bit of compensation.

Palace are also close to agreeing a deal for Ousmane Diomande, a highly-rated centre-back who appears to be Guehi’s replacement.

All these signs seem to indicate that the Englishman is on his way to Anfield this summer, and he may cause a big wave of change if he does.
