Liverpool and Newcastle are in the middle of a second big transfer saga in as many summers.

The Reds have had an interesting recent relationship with the Magpies, having been beaten by them in the Carabao Cup final last March.

That game at Wembley highlighted the quality within the Newcastle squad, and proved why Liverpool have been keen to raid St James’ Park in recent summers.

While it remains to be seen whether Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak is successful this year, the Reds will be hoping for better luck than they had with Anthony Gordon in 2024.

Gordon almost joined Liverpool after the two teams reportedly agreed a fee of around £75m.

However, with Newcastle mired in PSR trouble, they ultimately decided to make other sales and pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute.

One year on from the saga, Gordon has finally spoken out about it.

After an excellent season for Newcastle in 2023/24 saw Liverpool come calling, Gordon struggled to hit the same heights last term.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, the 24-year-old has now admitted that his failed move to Anfield did impact on him heading into the campaign.

“It’s true, that was the case,” Gordon says on almost joining Liverpool.

Then I had the transfer stuff.”

“With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window.

“And then to get my head around it again (when it didn’t happen) was hard.”

If Gordon’s saga was difficult to get his head around, then Isak’s current will-he-won’t-he with Liverpool is an even bigger deal.

Interestingly, Gordon says he sympathises with his Newcastle teammate, cryptically adding that he hopes all parties ‘get want they want.’

“I’m a human being.

I feel for him,” the England international says.

I hope everyone gets what they want in the end.”

Although the door appears to be closed on Gordon joining Liverpool for now, perhaps there remains a chance of seeing he and Isak line up together at Anfield one day.
