Mohamed Salah etched his name deeper into football lore on Sunday, surpassing Sergio Agüero to become the Premier League’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer during Liverpool’s title-clinching 5-1 rout of Tottenham.
The Egyptian’s 185th league goal-a clinical finish that sparked jubilant scenes at Anfield-cemented his status as one of England’s greatest imports.
Yet even as red smoke billowed over the Kop, attention turned to another looming milestone: Ian Rush’s seemingly untouchable club record of 346 goals.
Salah’s strike against Tottenham (his 28th league goal this season) moved him clear of Sergio Agüero’s 184, a feat achieved in 292 appearances compared to the Argentine’s 275.
But the 32- year-old’s ambitions stretch may stretch beyond team trophies, even if the Egyptian does not admit it publicly.
With 244 goals in 397 Liverpool appearances across all competitions, he now trails only Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346) in the club’s pantheon.
At his current rate of 0.61 goals per game, Salah would need approximately 168 more matches to surpass Rush-a target not really achievable in the 2 seasons he has left.
An extension beyond 2027 would boost his chances.
But for Ian Rush, he is not worried about Egyptian gaining on his record and would welcome it if it means more success for Liverpool.
“Records are there to be broken, and I’m delighted he’s breaking them as it means the team is doing well,” Rush said to the Irish Examiner.
“The most important thing when breaking records is to make sure the team is winning trophies.”
“When I see Salah scoring, I’m not worried about my record – I’m celebrating like every Liverpool fan.
The team always comes first.”
“He’s already a legend.
He’s one of the greatest players to ever play for Liverpool.”
The former Welsh international added:
“If I was playing now, I’d love to play with Salah.
He drags defenders out of position and I’d thrive on the space he creates.”
It’s a classy response from the Liverpool legend, with Rush now enjoying an ambassadorial role at Liverpool and was present at Anfield on Sunday to watch the side clinch the title.
Rush, who took 14 seasons to amass 346 goals, believes records exist to be broken.
