Liverpool legend Ian Rush has offered his thoughts on Trent Alexander-Arnold and his all-but-official move to Real Madrid.
The former Wales international, whose 346 goals for Liverpool make him the record goalscorer in the club’s history, had a similar experience in his career.
Ian Rush’s 1986 move to Juventus and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s transfer to Real Madrid share striking similarities, as both players left Liverpool at the peak of their powers to join European giants.
Rush departed Anfield after a sensational season, having scored 40 goals, making his £3.2 million transfer a British record at the time.
His move came during an era when English clubs were banned from European competitions, and Serie A reigned as the world’s top league.
Despite a promising start, Rush struggled to fully adapt to Juventus’ style and culture, leading to a swift return to Liverpool after just one season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Ian Rush revealed that he is supportive of Alexander-Arnold and the impending move.
When quizzed on how he felt about the news, he answered:
“Yeah, good luck to him!” He’s looking for a different chapter?
I went to Juventus, to tell you the truth, for financial reasons,” Rush explained.
“I went there and I realized that the grass is not always greener on the other side!”
“It’s not just football as well, what he actually said was for personal reasons as well – so you have to look at that.”
“I’m sure he will be welcomed back to Liverpool whenever he comes back.”
“He’s at that age now [26] where he has to decide: ‘do I stay at Liverpool or move on?'”
“So he’s taken that decision to try and get a new chapter into his career.”
Rush then highlighted how fans of clubs like Real Madrid have very little patience for big-name signings – and that Alexander-Arnold will have to perform from the off:
“It’s something new for him, he’s going to a great club,” Rush continued.
“The problem is when you go to a great club like Juventus or Real Madrid, you’ve got to hit the ground running.”
“If you have a bad start, the fans are straight on to you so hopefully he gets a good start.”
The Real Madrid fanbase is infamous for how fickle they are with their players, and how they treat their club legends.
Gareth Bale, who statistically is one of their best-ever players, was treated very poorly toward the end of his Madrid tenure.
Alexander-Arnold is no doubt aware of this, but it’s still a pertinent reminder by Rush.
