Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has been forced to explain his comment regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold's announcement.

The news emerged on Monday morning, sparking a reaction from supporters, as well as players past and present.

Mohamed Salah was among them late on Monday night, while Curtis Jones led the tributes from the current crop of Premier League winners and also Jordan Henderson, who showed his true colours with his post about the Liverpool academy graduate.

But hours later, he replied to his own comment: "LEGEND OFC!"

Reports intensified on Monday regarding Alexander-Arnold in light of his announcement with the suggestion that he was closing in on a move to Real Madrid.

Liverpool maintained their efforts to try to keep the academy graduate but couldn't offer the new challenge that Alexander-Arnold admitted that he sought.

"One hundred per cent, [staying was] a massive possibility," he said in an interview with the official club website.

"I've got full confidence in the manager and the staff and the club going forward.

"It's not about me thinking we're not going to fight for titles or fight for trophies season-in, season-out because I knew from these first few moments with the manager that he was a winner, he was aiming to go and win things.

"And you've seen that this season with the way that we've played.

"So it was never about not having confidence in that, it just boiled down to what I felt I needed, a change.

"That's something I need to do on my personal journey as a person, but also as a player and a professional, to go and challenge myself elsewhere.
