Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has offered support to Rayan Cherki following his £30million move to Manchester City.

The 21-year-old was one of the latest faces through the door at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola bolstered his side ahead of the Club World Cup.

Cherki was joined by Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli who penned terms during the first stage of the transfer window which was open between June 1 and June 10.

City are looking to close the gap to Liverpool after the Reds ending their stranglehold at the Premier League summit last term.

Arne Slot's side are looking to make reinforcements of their own after the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong and remain in talks with Florian Wirtz over a blockbuster move to the Premier League.

The Dutchman met with Cherki at the beginning of June after the meeting was scheduled prior to interest in the Bayer Leverkusen star ramped up.

Cherki was considered as one of a number of back-up options if the 22-year-old Germany hadn't been receptive to Liverpool's interest.

But Slot wanted to honour the arrangement that saw him cut-short his holiday following the Reds' Premier League triumph.

City won the race to sign Cherki after the France international became the topic of interest of clubs around Europe in recent years.

It was suggested that Lyon's financial difficulties had forced them to sell one of their best players and the East Manchester club landed his services following links with Arsenal and Manchester United.

Cherki took to social media to bid farewell to his boyhood club ahead of a move to the Premier League and among those who offered support was the Reds defender and international teammate, Konate.

The 21-year-old said: "Thousands of emotions, hundreds of memories and an indelible imprint in the heart.

"No speech could ever truly capture everything that is going through my mind at the moment of leaving this lion-struck jersey and coat that I have worn so proudly for almost 15 years.

"An imaginary honour from my dressing room.

No words could also convey the gratitude I feel for everyone who has been with me to realize and live through this dream with its joys, sorrows, successes and failures.

"Leaders, educators, coaches, sports, medical and administrative staff, volunteers, stewards, teammates and more generally all employees of the club.

"Thank you to the supporters for their unwavering support and affection, in good and in bad.

Thank you also to President Jean-Michel Aulas for offering me the opportunity to live this adventure with this club, my club, the one of my heart, the one in my city.

"Thanks also to all those who have accompanied me, off the field, in accomplishing my challenges.

Finally, thank you to my family, my support, for the love they show me and carry me everyday.

"To all, I've been trying to live up to what you brought me.
