Rangers boss Russell Martin is determined to strengthen key areas of his Rangers squad in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the manager’s plans and key positions which have yet to be addressed.

A new striker, winger and centre-back are the priority targets as things stand as Martin is keen to upgrade on the likes of Cyriel Dessers after a slow start to the season.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 15 July that Rangers plan to strengthen their attacking options with new forwards top of their list.

Meanwhile, any key departures from the squad would force them to move for replacements as Martin is determined not to see his squad weakened.

Football Insider revealed on 16 August that Rangers expect offers for Nicolas Raskin and Hamza Igamane and money from their sales would be reinvested into the squad.

Football Insider revealed in March that Rangers would be backed with £25million to spend on new players as they eyed a sizeable overhaul of the squad.

The club are hopeful of achieving qualification to the Champions League league stage, while they remain determined as ever to pip Celtic to all three domestic titles.

O’Rourke explained that the Martin is determined to strengthen the spine of his team to bolster his chances of a successful first season in charge at Ibrox.

“They’re looking to strengthen in key areas of the squad,” he told Football Insider.

“They’ve been quite busy so far bringing in a number of new players and have loosened the purse strings to allow Russell Martin to strengthen his side.

“Up front, a striker would be a key area that Martin would still want to strengthen.

“Cyriel Dessers has started the majority of games so far this season, but Martin wants to improve there.

“He wants to bring in somebody to score him goals and challenge for silverware in his debut season at Ibrox.

“They also want to bring in another winger after they’ve brought in Antman from Holland.

“He was a big signing, but they want to bring in another winger on the other side.

“Centre-back could be another area they look to strengthen after bringing in Nasser Djiga on loan.

“The spine of the team is where Russell Martin wants to strengthen.”

As they continue to put plans in place to strengthen their squad this summer, the Ibrox club have been linked with a move for West Ham’s Andy Irving.

Football Insider revealed on 17 August that Irving could quit West Ham in search of increased playing time, with Rangers joining Celtic in the race for his signature.

The one-cap Scotland international is keen to play more regular minutes and is expected to jump at the opportunity to play European football this season.

This comes after former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider that Irving could join Celtic “next week” as they push to agree terms.
