'If money is no object' - Wrexham 'dream' of move for Liverpool star who Jurgen Klopp loves

Wrexham's executive director, Humphrey Ker, has revealed how he'd love to sign Wataru Endo for the League One newcomers - insisting the Japan international's move to Liverpool last summer was a "good lesson" for modern football.

The 31-year-old midfielder sealed a move to Anfield last August in a deal worth roughly £16million after the Reds failed to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Liverpool had identified Lavia and Caicedo, then of Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively, as their preferred targets to replace Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who ended their glittering Anfield careers by moving to the Saudi Pro League.

After missing out on a deal for the inexperienced Saints midfielder, the Reds offered a British transfer record of £115m for Caicedo.

But after the Ecuadorian midfielder snubbed a move to Anfield in favour of joining Chelsea, Liverpool quickly turned their attention to Endo.

The Japan international, though, struggled to make an impact at Anfield initially but has established himself as a key component of the Reds' side in 2024, which included an almighty performance at Wembley in February's League Cup triumph over Chelsea.

As a result of a stellar debut season at Anfield, Ker has admitted he'd love to sign Endo for Wrexham, owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

"Who is kind of a perfect encapsulation of the fury in the summer when Liverpool missed out on Caicedo and Lavia and it was all doom and gloom and disaster.

“And then they sign Wataru Endo and it was like ‘well, who's this guy?

I'm a big fan of his.”

After Endo signed a four-year deal with Liverpool last summer, Jurgen Klopp revealed that several of his former players had been in touch to congratulate him on the deal.

It was a very positive thing in Germany – he's super-highly respected.

?“I think for Stuttgart it's really hard to lose him but on the other side I think it's a good deal as well, one year left [on his] contract.

For us, it's really good.
