'I'm disappointed' - Fabian Schar sends injury update to Newcastle fans

Wed 27 August 2025 11:55, UK

Fabian Schar offered Newcastle supporters an update after suffering a head injury during the side’s narrow loss to Liverpool.

The Magpies endured a heartbreaking defeat in stoppage time as youngster Rio Ngumoha scored a late winner for Liverpool, but there were also immediate concerns over Schar after a clash to his head moments earlier.

The defender was substituted off in the 81st minute following the injury, despite initially being attended to by the medical team and being cleared to continue.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett criticised the decision to allow Schar and the game to continue, stating that referees should have stopped the match following his head injury.

In the aftermath of the loss, the Swiss defender shared a message with supporters, providing reassurance about his condition and reflecting on the match.

Schar has offered an update to Newcastle supporters after his head injury during the defeat to Liverpool, confirming that he is “ok”.

He posted on X: “I am ok!

Disappointed to come off but proud of the team spirit and energy last night!”

The news will be a relief for Newcastle fans, especially after Sandro Tonali and Joelinton were also substituted due to injuries but Schar’s blow appears less serious than initially feared.

The centre-back has been a mainstay for the Magpies since joining in 2018, making over 200 appearances in black and white.

Schar signed a new contract with Newcastle in April as he approached the final months of his previous deal, at a time when another long-serving player in Callum Wilson departed upon expiry of his contract.

Despite being 33, Schar has continued to deliver reliable performances, particularly covering for Sven Botman last season.

However, with Malick Thiaw joining Newcastle earlier this summer, competition for places in central defence has increased.

While 16-year-old Ngumoha grabbed the headlines with his match-winning goal, pre-match discussion had centred on Alexander Isak, who had pushed for a move to Liverpool.

However, Football Insider now reports that Isak could stay at Newcastle and be reintegrated into Eddie Howe’s squad, despite his public desire to leave.
