Celtic’s owners must be braced for mutiny on the terraces when Brendan Rodgers leaves, according to a former Scottish football CEO.
The Hoops were dumped out of the Champions League in embarrassing fashion, losing on penalties to Kazakh champions Kairat Almaty in the play-offs.
Fans reacted with anger and disgust to a statement Celtic released on Sunday (7 September), in which they tried to explain their transfer strategy.
Football Insider revealed last week that Rodgers could quit his role as manager of the Glasgow giants, as a result of a lack of support from the board.
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the board will not change their way of doing things.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the Hoops owners are becoming stuck in their ways and have lost their hunger to move forward.
Celtic spent just £13million in the summer transfer window, which was seen by supporters as a lack of ambition.

Wyness added that the board will see some real anger if Rodgers does depart as a result of the current situation.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Now, what I’m hearing from my Celtic contacts is that they’re feeling that the board has become a little bit ivory tower in its view these days.
They’re used to doing things a certain way, they’re not listening to what they need to do to change, they’re not prepared to change, and there isn’t a hunger and a desire anymore to go forward.
It isn’t as though the club’s bust, the very opposite, that’s what frustrates people.
“If Brendan goes, then I think the board will see some real anger, obviously depending on who they bring in.
“I think the board have made some mistakes.
They could easily have made a couple of younger signings, exciting signings this summer, supported Brendan, and then they’d have been able to dodge that bullet.
They haven’t, and the statement they’ve just put out is basically a suicide letter.”
Meanwhile, Celtic will not allow Daizen Maeda to leave in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Maeda has admitted that he wanted a move away from Celtic in the summer, but the club blocked his potential transfer.
Following the revelation, there has been concern within the Hoops fanbase that the 27-year-old could try to force an exit when the window reopens.
However, sources say that the Japanese international is likely to be leading the line for Rodgers‘ side due to their lack of depth in forward areas, meaning they cannot afford to let him go mid-season.
