Joe Gomez was called-up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate this week after starring for Liverpool this season, and Micah Richards has declared himself “buzzing” at the decision.
Gomez, 26, last won an England cap way back in 2020 – and now has the chance to add to his 11 caps after an impressive season at Anfield. He has rid himself of his injury past, to clock up 40 appearances.
He was taken off, but only as a precaution last night during Liverpool’s 6-1 win over Sparta Prague at Anfield in the Europa League. Southgate spoke about his decision, stating it is great to see Gomez back.
Two tough friendlies lay on the horizon for Southgate and England and Gomez will have the chance to show Southgate why he deserves to be in this summer’s Euro 2024 squad. His versatility could be key.
Richards responded to the news that Gomez – who Jurgen Klopp says has developed massively this season – is back in the England side. Richards told The Rest Is Football that Gomez “ticks all the boxes”.
“Big games, as a defender, you can show off. When you have a good game against the best team in the league like Man City, not just one-on-one defending it’s more mentality, positioning, versatility.
“He ticks all of those boxes. He fully deserves it. Not just because he’s playing well but to overcome that injury, different positions, can be trusted alongside whoever that may be. I’m really buzzing for that.”

Not only is it great to see a player of Gomez’s calibre and quality return to the England side, especially in an area where England are not blessed with options – but he can be a real weapon going into Euro 2024.
With Ben White ruling himself out – something which Chris Sutton says he will regret – Gomez’s recall will remind all of just how good he is, in numerous roles. England must pick 23 players this summer.
Having a couple in the side who can do more than one job is key. White could do that – right-back, centre-back, even midfield. But Gomez can too, anywhere in defence. A brilliant decision by Southgate.
