Liverpool have been confidently backed to finalise a deal for Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace amid huge surprise at the situation.

The Eagles are in an awkward position as they look to sell their captain for a decent fee considering he has just one-year left on his contract.

The 25-year-old is has been on the radar of various suitors with sources telling Football Insider on 12 August that Liverpool and Newcastle will make moves for Guehi later in the transfer window.

Arne Slot has been in talks with the England international, but Guehi wants assurances over his minutes at Anfield if he were to join with the World Cup in mind.

Dubbed as “England’s best defender”, the centre-back has been tipped by a pundit to join the Premier League champions before the window closes.

Speaking on talkSPORT (13 August), former Aston Villa striker Darren Bent was waxing lyrical about the Eagles skipper and how his “£35million” price tag was an absolute bargain.

The former Tottenham frontman said: “I think he’s [Guehi] is top draw, I genuinely do and I’m shocked to be fair at that price.

“The amount of teams that are looking for centre-halves…I’m a big fan of his.

“You are getting him for £35m?

Oh my goodness, when you think about the going rate for some centre-halves recently.”

Bent is convinced that Guehi will bag his move to Anfield

Asked whether the Reds would finalise the deal for Guehi this summer instead of waiting next summer to potentially get the England international on a free, Bent responded: “I think they’ll get it done.

“I’ve got no doubts they’ll get it done because why would they not be able to get it done?”

Football Insider verdict

Despite the obvious turn off for the former Chelsea youth prodigy of there being two centre-backs ahead of him at Anfield, Guehi should be highly optimistic over his minutes.

Ibrahima Konate in particular was fairly injury-prone last season and, with the continued load of fixtures, will need resting after midweek exertions.

Virgil van Dijk will remain an ever-present at the back for the Reds, but the England international should see an opportunity to play once a week minimum.

In my opinion, playing regularly at least once a week will definitely keep him on Thomas Tuchel’s radar for the World Cup and, if he keeps fit, there is always a high likelihood the 25-year-old plays even more if the Frenchman gets injured.

Moreover, although Palace have been very successful of late, the lack of investment in the team is concerning and the ex-Swansea loanee should be thinking ahead to take the next step up before he gets dragged down by the Eagles’ failure to strengthen their squad and reach new heights.

He is a level-head character and a team player, but now is the time for the defender to be selfish and do what is best for him.
