Noni Madueke staked his claims to start for both Arsenal and England with a standout performance and a goal against Serbia.

Thomas Tuchel’s side finally hit their straps in Belgrade and put the hosts to the sword with a 5-0 victory, as Madueke, Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi all opened their international accounts in a one-sided display.

Madueke quickly put England 2-0 up with his first goal for the Three Lions after Harry Kane opened the scoring in the first half, with Konsa, Guehi and Marcus Rashford adding to the scoreline in the second.

England‘s statement victory was a stark contrast from their insipid 2-0 win over Andorra four days prior, with Madueke one of few players to impress in that match as he continues to push for a regular spot in Tuchel’s starting XI.

Guehi and Konsa did no harm to their chances of being England’s starting centre-backs next summer with a pair of goals from second-half corners, but Madueke stole plenty of the headlines from the right.

Roy Keane described Madueke as a “defender’s nightmare” after he burst through the Serbian backline in the 35th minute, coming inside to score after a first-time flick from the similarly stellar Morgan Rogers.

After two strong international performances in the absence of his Arsenal team-mate Bukayo Saka, Madueke posted on Instagram to celebrate his maiden goal with the message of: “Ecclesiastes 3:11”.

Rogers commented to say that their combination for Madueke’s goal was; “Like the old times”, and fellow Arsenal star Declan Rice said “so happy for you” after he also got an assist for Kane’s opener.

Football Insider Verdict

England went into this month’s international break without the injured Saka, Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer among others, but their best performance under Tuchel so far highlighted their huge depth.

Rogers was compared to Paul Gascoigne following his display in the number 10 role, and two strong displays on the right from Madueke suggest that a fit-again Saka will face a fight to reclaim his place.

Madueke, Saka, Palmer, Phil Foden and Jarrod Bowen are just five of the options Tuchel has at his disposal on the flanks, and time is running out for the German to decide his strongest XI before next summer’s World Cup.
