Liverpool need a new manager this summer.

The Merseyside club need to adjust to life without Jurgen Klopp, and a new gaffer needs to be installed before the start of next season.

There’ve been plenty of links to a number of managers in recent weeks, and it looks as though Xabi Alonso is Liverpool’s top-choice to come in as the new man at Anfield.

However, with Bayern Munich also circling, Liverpool need a Plan B.

Luckily, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds do have a secondary candidate in mind for if they can’t get Alonso.

According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on the Men in Blazers Podcast, Ruben Amorim is in second place in the race to become Liverpool’s next manager.

Romano shared what he knows about Amorim.

“Ruben Amorim is a concrete candidate for the Liverpool job.

I think he is in position number two at this moment from what I’m told.

It is difficult to negotiate with Portuguese clubs, especially for special people like Ruben Amorim, but for sure the interest from Liverpool is there.

I think Amorim is in position number two, he is a candidate for the Liverpool job at this moment more than Roberto De Zerbi,” Romano said.

This is a very intriguing update.

Amorim looks to be a top coach having worked wonders with Sporting over the past few years, but, at the same time, he’s never managed at the very top level at a club like Liverpool.

At least Alonso knows the club from his playing days and is about to win the Bundesliga, Amorim, with all due respect, has only ever worked in Portugal, and hiring him at this early juncture in his career could be a risk.

Of course, some top coaches have come from Portugal in recent years such as Jose Mourinho and Marco Silva, but so have the likes of Andre Villas-Boas and Bruno Lage who didn’t fare so well in England.
