'Impressive': Journalist says he thinks Arne Slot was delighted with 'explosive' Liverpool youngster yesterday

Liverpool kicked off their pre-season with a win and some youngsters certainly left a good impression.

Football is finally back and for Reds fans, they got to see some of their favourite players back in action as Liverpool beat Preston 3-1 on Sunday.

They were also treated to seeing some of their new signings, as well as some highly-talented youngsters, with Rio Ngumoha in particular shining.

Arne Slot will be using this time to experiment with his players and despite being just 16, Ngumoha was one of the players he was keen to see in action, and it certainly paid off.

However, although he shone throughout his short cameo, there was one thing that especially stood out and suggests that Liverpool have a serious talent on their hands.

The majority of players do not even feature for the first team until their late teens at least, but Ngumoha is not only getting his chance so young, but he appears to be taking it too.

He has a low centre of gravity, is rapid and incredibly skilful, but as journalist David Lynch correctly pointed out, his end product is something that would please his manager the most.

“Even in just 45mins, he seemed to be constantly running at his man, and I think you see that from young players when they are thrown in and given opportunities,” Lynch said on his YouTube channel.

“But what you want to see, and what you usually see as well when they get older, is that end product.

That’s the bit where you see the maturity and the calmness in the box, yet we saw that from Rio Ngumoha which I think is the most impressive aspect of his performance really.

“It will also be the thing that most pleases Slot, that he did supply that end product as it was really, really impressive and a good start to his pre-season.”

The young Englishman was key in the build-up for Liverpool’s first goal as he kick-started the attack with a tricky run down the left, eventually laying the ball off for Federico Chiesa.

He was labelled ‘explosive’ by former Red Stephen Warnock during the game too, with his ability to use both feet, something that really caused the Preston defence problems.

He might be very young and the hype around him may be huge, but if he is good enough, he is old enough, and he might have a big role to play in the upcoming season.

Luis Diaz looks all but nailed on to leave this summer, meaning that Cody Gakpo will be able to hold down the left wing position next season if the Reds do not replace the Colombian.

That being said, they might not even think they need to replace him if they believe Ngumoha is ready for the step up, something he will have to prove throughout pre-season.

Gakpo will not be able to play all the games so the 16-year-old could feature in cup games and also come on for the Dutchman towards the end of matches, something that will be a great experience for the teenager.

It’s a risk but the hype around him is real, and with Ngumoha himself believing one day he will win the Ballon d’Or, it is safe to say he is not short of confidence.
