Insider: Aston Villa would accept Matty Cash offer on one condition

Thu 28 August 2025 11:43, UK

Aston Villa are prepared to allow Matty Cash to leave the club before the transfer window closes, according to their former senior scout.

Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout at Man United and Sunderland and remains very well-connected at his former clubs, exclusively told Football Insider that Unai Emery feels he can upgrade on the 28-year-old in the transfer market.

However, a deal will only be approved if they can bring in a replacement in the coming days as they do not want to be caught short in the market.

Football Insider exclusively revealed in June that Aston Villa are willing to sell Cash but are struggling to drum up interest as a result of his £100,000-per-week wages.

However, Nottingham Forest have since expressed an interest in bringing the right-back back to the City Ground as part of a spending spree under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Cash remains the first-choice in his position at Villa Park, but the addition of a more defensive-minded right-back would allow Emery to green-light his exit.

Brown first told Football Insider in October that Villa staff have concerns about Cash which have lingered since before his £14million arrival from Forest in 2020.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that the Poland international could be allowed to leave if he is replaced.

“Aston Villa still want to sign a right-back,” he told Football Insider.

“Unai Emery sees it as an area of his team where he can upgrade on the options he has at the moment.

“Cash is somebody they feel they can improve on, they would want to get somebody in who is a bit better defensively to work in Emery’s team.

“But that hasn’t happened so far in this window, so they’re sticking with him at the moment.

“I think if an offer did come in for him, from Nottingham Forest or anybody else, Villa would be prepared to accept it.

“But only if they can line up a replacement to come in for him.

“They don’t want to lose their first-choice right-back and be caught short with nobody to replace him.

“It’s a move they would be open to, but there are a few dominoes which will have to fall into place before they can get that done.”

Cash is not the only player who could be on his way out of Villa Park this summer, as speculation continues to surround the future of Morgan Rogers.

Football Insider revealed on 26 August that Villa could reluctantly cash in on Rogers and use the “huge” fee to reinvest in strengthening Emery’s squad.

That is despite their previous refusal to entertain the idea of his exit, as their financial issues have sparked a change of thinking after a difficult window.

This comes after Football Insider revealed that Tottenham are accelerating a move for Rogers, and are hoping to capitalise on the financial concerns to agree a cut-price deal.
