Man United are confident of beating Newcastle United to the signing of RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, according to their former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 22-year-old will have the final say about his eventual destination.

This comes after the Red Devils made a bid totalling £73.8million for the Slovenia international as they believe he favours a move to Old Trafford.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 3 August that Sesko wants to join Man United despite the rival interest from Newcastle as both clubs are pushing to agree terms.

Having already beaten the Magpies to the signing of Bryan Mbeumo, Ruben Amorim’s side are confident they can do so again.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 1 August that Man United are pushing to sign Sesko and believe they have the financial muscle to get a deal over the line.

This article contains exclusive comment from Mick Brown, a football transfer expert and former chief scout for Man United and Sunderland among others.

Brown told Football Insider in June that Man United are pushing to sign a striker after missing out on Viktor Gyokeres, who made clear his desire to join Arsenal.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also worked for the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham, explained that Sesko is the club’s top target amid a growing confidence they can agree a deal.

“Man United are confident they can agree a deal for Sesko,” he told Football Insider.

“Ultimately, the decision will be with the striker and whichever club has the edge over the other will come from where he wants to go.

“United obviously still have that attraction and we’ve seen it already with Bryan Mbeumo.

“If they have the money and they’re willing to pay what Leipzig want, they’ll back themselves to convince him to join them ahead of Newcastle.

“In my experience with players and agents, they’ll go wherever the money is.

“But from United’s point of view, he’s their top target for the rest of the window because they’ve been looking to bring in a striker all summer.

“If they can reach an agreement with the club, they feel they can get it done.”

As United continue to push ahead with their plans to sign Sesko, the future of Rasmus Hojlund remains uncertain despite his desire to stay.

Brown told Football Insider on 4 August that United will accept offers for Hojlund if they can bring in a replacement first as interest remains high.

However, the 22-year-old is more likely to stay than leave at this stage, after both Hojlund and Ruben Amorim spoke out about the striker’s future.

That represents a significant U-turn from the boss, after Brown told Football Insider in May that Hojlund is unlikely to remain at Old Trafford in the coming season.
