Insider: Man United star could quit after 'huge' Saudi Pro League offer

Tue 9 September 2025 19:15, UK

Harry Maguire could be tempted to leave Man United if a “huge” offer arrives from the Saudi Pro League, according to their former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade at Man United during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 32-year-old will decide based on his playing time this season.

With less than 12 months remaining on his contract, a number of clubs in the Middle East are believed to be interested in landing the centre-back on a free transfer.

Man United were adamant Maguire was not for sale in August as he remains part of Ruben Amorim‘s plans, but could be powerless to letting him leave in 2026.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider in January that Maguire would hold sit-down talks with Amorim about his future at the club.

Brown told Football Insider in May that Man United plan to offer Maguire a new contract as they are keen to keep him beyond the expiry of his current deal.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade during their most successful period, has insisted that the defender is likely to leave if he isn’t playing regularly amid concerns about his role.

“Maguire could end up leaving Man United,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s talk about interest from Saudi Arabia, and if they come in with a huge offer for him then he’s going to have to consider it.

“In my opinion, he’s still one of United’s best defenders and the manager has spoken about how important he is and all of that sort of thing.

“I think if he’s that important, they need to be playing him from the start because otherwise he’s well within his rights to be looking at moving away.

“I expect he’ll wait and see how the season goes, and if he’s not playing regularly, he might take the money and move on.

“They’ve got a lot of options, a lot of younger players, but Maguire’s experience can be so valuable as we’ve seen when he’s called upon.

“Amorim says a lot of positive things about him, but at the end of the day if he’s not playing games, there’s no reason why he would stick around.”

While competition for places is growing at Old Trafford, there remains a belief that Maguire can be a crucial player in any success the club have.

Brown told Football Insider Maguire has won over Amorim with his performances despite the initial expectation that he could be part of a squad overhaul.

The boss has been extremely complimentary of the former club captain, insisting he is a “leader” and an “important player in the team” thanks to his impressive displays.

So far this term, he has featured in three of their four games albeit only once from the start, and scored a late equaliser to save his side despite Man United’s eventual penalty shoot-out defeat to Grimsby.

Last season, the former England star made 40 appearances across all competitions and proved his worth as a valuable squad player despite United’s dreadful season.

Despite the options at Amorim’s disposal, he continues to insist on Maguire’s place in the squad, raising further questions about where his long-term future lies.
