Tottenham are unlikely to reignite their interest in Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze despite James Maddison’s injury, according to their former scout.

Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout at Man United and Blackburn and remains very well-connected at his former clubs, exclusively told Football Insider that Spurs will prioritise alternative targets ahead of the 27-year-old.

As a result of his lofty price tag and rival interest from Arsenal, Thomas Frank will instead look elsewhere to strengthen in the attacking midfield position.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 30 July that Crystal Palace are sticking to Eze’s asking price and will not accept offers below his £68million release clause.

The England international’s release clause is set to expire before the Premier League season begins, but that is unlikely to change the Eagles’ stance.

Brown told Football Insider earlier this summer that Tottenham were holding talks with Eze’s agent and representatives about the possibility of a move to North London.

This article contains exclusive comment from Mick Brown, a football transfer expert and former chief scout for Man United and Sunderland among others.

Brown told Football Insider on 4 August that Tottenham want to replace Maddison after he suffered an “awful” injury blow during their pre-season clash against Newcastle.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that Spurs have set their sights on a number of targets in that position.

“I would be surprised if they went for Eze,” he told Football Insider.

“He is one they’ve been interested in, but I don’t see him as a replacement for James Maddison.

“They play in the same position, but they do very different jobs and have different styles of play.

“There are other players Tottenham are looking at who probably suit that position better in terms of being a replacement for Maddison.

“Palace don’t want to lose Eze either, so it wouldn’t be an easy deal for Spurs to do.

“They’re going to stand by that release clause and I don’t believe Tottenham will be willing to pay it, and even if they did they’d have competition from Arsenal.

“So no, I don’t think Tottenham will make a move for him as things stand.

“They want to find a replacement for Maddison, but they’re going to look at other targets.”

While Spurs prepare to step up their ambitions to sign a new attacking midfielder, a number of players could still leave the club including Yves Bissouma.

Football Insider revealed on 4 August that Bissouma is “more than likely” to leave Tottenham this summer after falling down the pecking order under Thomas Frank.

This comes amid speculation about a number of midfielders including the likes of Conor Gallagher, who has been strongly linked with a return to the Premier League.

However, Football Insider revealed on 1 August that Atletico Madrid are unlikely to sell Gallagher in the coming weeks despite renewed interest from Tottenham.
