Tottenham have set their sights on bringing in a replacement for James Maddison after he suffered an “awful” injury blow, according to their former scout.

Mick Brown, who also worked as the chief scout at Man United and Sunderland and remains very well-connected at his former clubs, exclusively told Football Insider that work has already begun behind the scenes to land a new attacking midfielder.

This comes after the 28-year-old was stretchered off with a suspected cruciate ligament injury during Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Newcastle during their pre-season tour in Seoul.

Thomas Frank has been planning to strengthen in that position all summer, having missed out on signing Morgan Gibbs-White after he signed a new Forest contract.

However, the injury blow to Maddison has now forced the transfer team to accelerate their efforts to land an alternative option as they fear he will miss months of action.

Brown told Football Insider on 29 July that Tottenham are interested in signing Jack Grealish and they could now be pushed to make a move for the attacking midfielder.

This article contains exclusive comment from Mick Brown, a football transfer expert and former chief scout for Man United and Sunderland among others.

Brown told Football Insider on 19 July that Daniel Levy would back Frank to overhaul his squad with a number of new signings expected late in the window.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that those plans are now expected to accelerate in the coming weeks.

“Tottenham are going to be forced into the market,” he told Football Insider.

“James Maddison is an important player for Tottenham and for Thomas Frank, so they’re going to need somebody who can come in and do that job.

“It’s awful seeing a player get an injury like that, especially in pre-season.

“It’s going to be a big blow to Tottenham to lose him, but they’ll be working hard to find a replacement.

“That attacking midfield position is one they’ve been looking to address for a while, obviously they missed out on Gibbs-White but they’re looking at alternatives.

“It’s always difficult when a player gets injured, but clubs do prepare for this type of thing.

“They look at areas of the squad that they might be weak in, so they’ll have players on their radar.

“Now they’re going to have to step up their efforts to sign one of them.”

Another midfielder who has been linked with a move to Tottenham this summer is Man United star Kobbie Mainoo, amid plenty of speculation about his future.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider on 2 August that Tottenham have considered signing Mainoo despite rumours having gone quiet.

The England international turned down the offer of a new contract at Old Trafford in March and was expected to explore his options this summer.

However, Brown told Football Insider that Mainoo looks set to remain at Man United for the coming season despite the initial expectation that he would leave.
