Tottenham are “speaking” to Aston Villa about a stunning move to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers before the transfer deadline, according to their former scout.

Mick Brown, who worked as a senior scout for both Spurs and Villa during his career and remains very well-connected at his former clubs, exclusively told Football Insider that the 23-year-old is one of Thomas Frank’s top attacking midfield targets.

Unai Emery has been extremely reluctant to lose his star man this summer, but Spurs feel a deal could be agreed and have held informal talks with Villa about the possibility.

This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed that Tottenham are accelerating a move for Rogers after holding preliminary discussions over a deal.

The England international enjoyed a fantastic first full season at Villa Park last time out, and has also attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea and Man City this summer.

Now, Football Insider has revealed that Villa are reluctantly preparing to lose Rogers as they feel a big-money sale would allow them to bolster their squad.

Brown told Football Insider in June that Aston Villa would turn down offers for Rogers as he remains a crucial part of their long-term plans under Emery.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has now insisted Tottenham are determined to find out what it would take to do a deal.

“Morgan Rogers would be an ambitious move for Tottenham,” he told Football Insider.

“The main thing with Villa at the moment, there are those financial issues hanging over them.

“They haven’t been able to spend big, so they want to keep the players they have got, and that will direct Morgan Rogers’ future and whether they let him go.

“He’s done really well at Villa so it’s no surprise there is interest in him.

“I’m told Tottenham have spoken to Villa about whether he might be available.

“Unai Emery wants to keep him, he’s one of his better players so that’s a given really.

“Spurs feel they can get a deal done, but if they do it certainly won’t be cheap.

“We know Tottenham need to replace Maddison, and they definitely see Rogers as somebody who can fill that attacking midfield role.

“Whether Villa will be open to a deal isn’t clear, I expect probably not, but Tottenham look like they’re going to try so we’ll see.”

Rogers is not the only attacking midfielder on Spurs’ radar in the closing stages of the window, as they remain interested in RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons.

Brown told Football Insider on 27 August that Tottenham could hijack Chelsea’s move to sign Simons as he is high on their list to replace the injured James Maddison.

Enzo Maresca’s side have been long-term admirers of the Netherlands international but have so far been unable to reach an agreement with Leipzig, leaving the door open.

This comes after Football Insider first revealed in July that Simons has asked to leave Leipzig with Chelsea and Arsenal keeping tabs on his situation.
