Hugo Ekitike was sent off after scoring a late winner as Liverpool knocked Southampton out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Is Hugo Ekitike suspended for Liverpool vs Crystal Palace?

Alexander Isak ended a quiet first half for the hosts with his first goal in Liverpool colours, firing home from Federico Chiesa’s cross after intercepting a loose pass at the back.

A similarly subdued second-half performance from the Reds allowed Southampton to equalise through Shea Charles with just 15 minutes remaining.

However, Chiesa turned provider once more, setting up Ekitike’s decisive goal after being played in behind by a precise long ball from Andy Robertson.

Hugo Ekitike calmly tapped the ball home to make it 2-1.

His celebration, which involved removing his shirt, earned him a second yellow card, but Liverpool held on to see out the remainder of the match and advance to the fourth round.

The Frenchman will miss Liverpool’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Reacting to Ekitike’s red card, vice-captain Andy Robertson told Sky Sports: “I’ll be very surprised if he does it again.

“Scoring a goal is emotional and he’s obviously forgot.

His first one is stupidity.

“It’s silly from his part?

He will learn from it and I’m sure he won’t do it again.”
