Alexander Isak's first Liverpool goal was overshadowed by Hugo Ekitike's late winner and sending off against Southampton as last season's finalists progressed to the Carabao Cup fourth-round with a 2-1 win.

Liverpool named an entirely different team after the Merseyside derby win and were second best against Championship side Southampton, who had made nine changes themselves, until Isak's opener on the stroke of half time at Anfield.

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy undid all of his team's hard work as his slack pass in the box was intercepted by Federico Chiesa and cut-back to the £125m striker who opened his account on his second start for Liverpool.

Wataru Endo made an even bigger error to hand Southampton their equaliser with less than 15 minutes left of the second half as he headed back towards his own goal with a botched clearance at a corner that was pounced on by substitute Shea Charles.

Liverpool came up with yet another late winner as Ekitike, who replaced Isak at half-time, found the back of the net after Chiesa squared to him for his second assist of the night.

The Frenchman then took off his shirt in celebration and received a second booking.

Ekitke will now be suspended for Liverpool's next game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, leaving Liverpool without a striker fit enough to play 90 minutes.

Arne Slot said before the game that Isak was not ready for a full match and that was made evident when he was told to do sprints at the break before being subbed off.
